Caption: One of These Women

Even those who used to know Lady Constance as the belle of the ball would find it very hard to recognize her in the rough-looking scullery maid that she has become. It wasn't just her plain hairstyle or her unflattering maid's uniform or the calluses on her hands - an unmistakable sign that she was a member of the working classes. The change was deeper than that.

Over the past two years - even since she went into hiding (just for a couple of weeks she thought then) as a maid at one of her friend's country estates - she gradually, but surely, assumed the habits, mannerism and speech patterns of her fellow servants. She not only dressed like one of them or spoke like an uneducated peasant - a deliberate choice she's made to blend in with her new friends who used to make fun of her posh speech - she was now thinking like one as well. She was one of these women.

  1. For some reason, I keep coming back to this caption especially.
Maybe one day I'll write a story inspired by it.

    1. Yes, I like this one too! I am exploring similar themes of "vulgarization" and "de-education" in my upcoming story, which I hope to publish in coming weeks, time permitting.
