After the Ball (1897), a silent short directed by Georges Méliès, is often credited as the first "erotic" film ever made or, more accurately, the earliest known movie to show (simulated) nudity. However, the way the "maid" looks at the camera around the 1:00 mark and the whole set-up, how quickly the "lady" must undress, strongly suggests they are on to something! Could it possibly be lady-to-maid roleplay? I'd certainly like to think that!
Is it really as old as 1897? I didn't think cinematography was so advanced in the 19th century but, if it is, then the film is interesting on that score alone.
ReplyDeleteI thought the 'water' looked a bit black and dry :)
thanks for posting, Camille.

Indeed it is. Water effects are pretty amazing, are they not? But if you think this is advanced, you should check out A Trip to the Moon (1902) by the same director, Georges Melies. Incredibly inventive given the technology at the time.
DeleteIncidentally, the actress playing the lady is director's wife. So another first for this little gem!
do you have another movie/film/scene about rich to rags, or downgrade lady?
ReplyDeleteEarlier I posted a link to Korean TV drama called Maids. You can find in under "film" tag. It has several very powerful downgrade elements.
DeleteIn opening scene for The Hot Chick, a beautiful princess swaps bodies with a slave in order to get out of marring a disgusting pig of a man. She seems very excited to see the other woman being forcefully escorted to her wedding, though I wonder how long that will last when she is in chains and used for far worse.

Maybe she's into that sort of thing like in The Princess and the Prostitute?
Oh yes, I remember that scene, thanks for reminding. For some reason i've totally forgot what movie it was from though. Probably my subconsciousness was trying to erase from memory the fact that I've seen The Hot Chick.
DeleteMelies was really something. A genius.
ReplyDeletePity there's no soundtrack. If I were going to post this video, I think I'd back it up with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdus8sJ8Jjs
Just 'cause, y'know . . . .
Thank you for the link!
