Her Most Remarkable Performance: A Lady to Maid Tale

Lady Georgina’s fascination with the life of the working classes leads her down a path of no return as she sinks deeper and deeper into her pretend persona of a lady's maid. What starts out as an enticing fantasy for the bored and spoiled Victorian-era heiress and an aspiring actress she hires for the game, slowly evolves into something far bigger as, step by step, she surrenders her status, her wealth and even her family name to live the life she was destined to live – that of a simple servant girl.

This dark tale of social downgrade is set in 1880s London, grimy Manchester, and New York when cultural and social differences between a lady and her maid were as rigid as the former’s corsets and as regulated as the latter’s black-and-white uniforms.

Scrubbing His Record Clean: From Manager to Office Cleaner

When David’s wife leaves him, it sets off a chain of events that allows the young manager to fulfil his long-harboured fantasy to descend the social ladder and experience life as Sylvia, a simple cleaner, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks with no education and no future.

Things gradually spiral out of control once Nicole, a girl from work, manipulates him into accepting deeper and more profound changes to his life than he ever wanted – or thought possible – making his dream a reality he’d find impossible to escape.

Act Your Age: Becoming Her Aunt

When a freak accident forces Josephine, a 25-year old actress, to impersonate her very rich aunt – a woman well into her 50s who was addicted to plastic surgery and was about to marry a much younger man to boot – she sees it as yet another role to play, albeit not the one she could add to her acting resume.

Still, she does her best, assuming the pampered life of her socialite aunt, a woman obsessed with her looks and preserving her fleeting youth. After all, it was only for a day or two until her fiancĂ© could arrange matters and divert suspicion. However, it soon becomes obvious that Josephine’s impersonation will have to be a lot deeper – and much longer – than she thought possible.

  3. Having had the privilege of proof/editing this story for Camille I suppose I'm biassed but it's a great addition to the genre. It also has the advantage of being able to read it in its entirety without being forced to wait on tenterhooks for the next episode to be posted. Plus it provides Camille with a little cash (hopefully) to invest in this website - so it's one of those clichéd win-win situations.

    I know you'll enjoy it.

    2. Congratulations, Camille, for your first book. I can only say "WOW!" You are now my favorite author at Smashwords!

Please don't abandon the "Ladies Becoming Maids" website. It is the only one which caters to this rather special segment. Your effort has just infused a new vitality to it, so please continue!

    3. Thank you, Richard. I am not planning to abandon it, do not worry! I just might transfer it to my own website to avoid a situation when google decides that my blog violates some rule and takes it down (it has been known to happen so better be safe than sorry). If/when that happens I will take all the content with me so you have no reason to worry. And thanks for the kind words!

    1. Thank you, Monica. If you haven't bought it yet, I've actually set it up as a paperback today as well (after finally conquering Word, Adobe and Gimp) if you want a hard copy. It hasn't been linked together with the e-book version or my author page yet (it takes up to 2 days), but you can find now it if you search by title or name in amazon search.

And yes, Molly's Saga is really high up on my to-do list!

    2. Thats amazing to hear that.
Could you please getting even more deeper and more detailed into the dressing/undressing scenes?
Its so wonderful reading about a superior elegant mistress who keeps her lady's maid(s) busy all the time. Talking all Services for granted without any words of thank to her perfect uniformed maids.
Instead of saying please or thank you she is always impatiently and never satisfied. Even the buttoning of her ladyships precious high collared blouses is a challenge for the well trained maids.

  9. Dear Ms. Langtry,
I have published a long-form story of downgrade fiction, Angela's Path, on Amazon. Your blog has been an inspiration and I would like you to have a copy. Can you provide contact information in confidence to www.neilalbertauthor.com ? Thank you. I will not release the information.

    3. There are elements of social downgrading in Angela's Path without the usual malicious intent of someone from a different social station manipulating the situation.
The story follows Angela, a successful business woman who is not just dissatisfied with her life but finds it is making her physically and psychologically ill. Cleaning appears to be therapeutic which gradually increases to cleaning outside her apartment and becomes more immersed in the housekeeping environment. Without adding any spoilers for potential readers the storyline is well written and and takes us on Angela's Path of self discovery and for readers of this genre an interesting change from the predictable path.
I have always considered Emma Finn to be the bench mark for this genre but Neil Albert gives a different perspective and, in my opinion one that ranks alongside the best.

    4. Interesting thanks. Does it also have cultural change elements like the blurb seems to suggest?

      Delete
    5. Yes, it's interesting that the author, in his afterwards mentions cultural appropriation and whether the reader might disagree but quickly "blames" Angela which I liked. It's certainly worth reading and if he wrote another similar I wouldn't hesitate to read it.

    6. Sounds great. Wondering if I should wait for my free copy then! The initial message seems to suggest I am entitled to one.
